Starlit Showgirl: My Orange Era Artistic Adventure

A Colorful DIY Wood Art Project awash in Color and Imagination

The (Imperfect) DIY Start

Before any orange magic could happen, I started with a raw, handmade frame—my very first one crafted entirely on my own. (That’s right, no husband assist this time!) She’s a little rough around the edges, and definitely not a “perfect ten,” but that’s honestly part of her charm. I fumbled, improvised, and learned as I went, and the end result is uniquely mine. Flaws and all, I’m pretty proud of this “no frills, all heart” creation—it shows that you don’t need perfection to make something you love.

Every masterpiece starts with potential – meet the raw frame that would become Starlit Showgirl

Cue the drama! Burning the frame brought out those moody charred accents I love, adding a whole new layer of depth and character to the wood. Watching the natural grain shift and darken in the flames was both mesmerizing and a little unpredictable—each pass of the torch left its own unique mark. Those subtle, smoky edges give the frame its soul, making it feel genuinely one-of-a-kind.

Cue the drama! Burning the frame brought out moody, charred accents and gave the wood its one-of-a-kind character.

The result? Far from perfect—but completely mine. This was one of my very first solo frames, so every little flaw or uneven edge feels like a chapter in its story. Each bump, scorch, or wobbly bit is a reminder of my learning curve and those proud, messy moments of figuring it out on my own. It might not look like something out of a factory, but it has personality—and I think that’s what makes it special.

The result? Not perfect—but completely mine. The smoky, uneven finish gives this frame its own personality, and every flaw tells a bit of my story.

With the smoky, charred finish achieved, the next challenge was bringing these pieces together—arranging each segment so the frame would truly come alive.

Piecing It Together

Laying out the individual wood segments onto my newly burned frame, I tested, adjusted, and moved pieces until everything looked just right. This part of the process is equal parts planning and trusting instinct—no two arrangements ever come out quite the same. It’s messy, fussy, and fun, and it marks the moment when the artwork really starts to take shape.

Getting the right fit is part puzzle, part improvisation. Each piece found its place with a little trial, error, and creative “winging it.”

Trial and error at its finest—sometimes it takes a dozen small moves to find the perfect arrangement that finally “clicks.”

All done—all pieces fitted and ready to glue

Once all the pieces finally clicked together, it was time for the “point of no return”—everything’s ready for glue!

Sometimes you have to take things apart to do them right! A behind-the-scenes look at adhesive applied just before final assembly.

Once every wood piece was set and held fast with glue, the real transformation began. It was finally time to turn this puzzle into a colorful showgirl statement.
